How to lock your Mac OS X
February 3rd, 2009
- Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain access
- Keychain access (menu item) -> Preferences
- Check “Show Status in Menu Bar”
- To lock your workstation, click on the lock icon in your Menu Bar and click “Lock Screen”
Just thought a no-nonsense reminder about this is in order.

There is another way that does not clutter the menu bar:
1. Go to System Preferences | Desktop & Screen Saver | Screen saver | Hot Corners… Set a hot corner for your screen saver.
2. Go to System Preferences | Security and check the “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver” option.
This is much easier on Windows, just hit Win-L.
Yea, that’s fine too, if you don’t mind entering your password every time you exit the screensaver. Personally, I do, so the Menu Bar approach is better.
Hot corners are evil because it is too easy to hit them accidentally.
I like the Keychain way of locking the screen but this is one of few things where Windows does it better.
Another way:
Just click on the user name in menu bar and click “Login Window…”.
